Kalsubai, at 5400 feet, is not only the highest peak in Maharashtra, but also in the Sahyadri ranges. It is in the Ahmednagar district and the base village is Bari, about 150 kilometers from Mumbai. One can take a local from Mumbai and get down at Kasara station. The trek is easy and the slope is gentle. It usually takes about three hours to get to the top but we did it in four hours. Close to the summit, there are three big iron ladders and it takes about half an hour from there. Some people sell lime water and buttermilk along the way. It is possible to camp on the plateau and there is a stall called â??Kalsubai tea stallâ?? which is run by an old man, Mr. Balu Santu Khade, and his two sons. If informed earlier, they can cook a nice meal in the night. The trek down is easy and takes about two and a half hours. We visited kalsubai in December , but the best time to visit is during September or October, just after the Monsoons, as there are many wild flowers blooming and the climate is pleasant.
