Kalavantin Durg is a very picturesque hill fort in the Sahyadri ranges â?? the Western Ghats in Maharashtra. The fort is about 50 kilometers from Mumbai. One can even take a local train from any of the local stations to Panvel. There are several buses which go to Thakurwadi â?? the base village for Kalavantin Durg. The trek is quite easy and midway during the trek; there are few houses where lunch can be ordered. The trek itself is for three hours so most people order lunch while going up. There are a lot of steps that are cut into the rock of the hill and some are quite steep. The views from the top are amazing and on a clear day one can also see a bit of Mumbai. The way down is quite simple, and takes about two hours (or two and a half hours, if done at leisure). After having lunch at one of the local villages, one can take a bus to Panvel and get the local back to Mumbai.
